PostSubject: Playoff Wildcard Round Predictions   Mon Jan 02, 2012 2:06 pm

The best time of the year is upon us....THE NFL Playoffs.

Now it is time to pick against the spread and to pick the point totals. First I will give you the matchups and the spread and then explain them.

Saturday Jan 7

Cincinnati at Houston (-3) 4:30 PM EST
Point Total 38.5

Detroit at New Orleans (-10.5) 8:00 PM EST
Point Total 59

Sunday January 8

Atlanta at NY Giants (-3) 1:00 PM EST
Point Total 49

Pittsburgh (-8 ) at Denver 4:30 PM EST
Point Total 35

OK heres how it will work, when you are picking the games how must take the point spread into consideration, the team that has a number in parenthesis is the favored team for that game and the number indicates how many points they are favored by so when you pick, your team must cover that spread. Using the Houston game as an example, Houston is favored by 3 points, so if you pick Houston and Houston wins the game by a score of 20-19, you would add 3 points to Cincys total therefore it would be as if Cincy won the game 22-20 since they are getting 3 points. If Houston would win 20-14 tehy would cover the 3 point spread. In the event that Houston wins by exactly 3 points the game is considered a push or a tie.

Now you also notice that each game has a point total as well, you must predict if the actual number of points scored will be over or under that point total. The Houston -Cincy game has a point total of 38.5 points, So if the game ends 20-19 that is a combined total of 39 points so that game would be over the point total.

Any questions feel free to ask and I hope it's not too confusing. The Superbowl will be even more complicated but will be a lot of fun!

I have a question CT. exactly wow is the scoring (from our point of view) done? Using the Cin/Hou game, lets say I pick Hou and I pick the points to be over the 38.5 mark. If the game ends with a Hou 10-0 win, my Hou pick would hold but the the points would not.

You would get a correct pick for the Houston win and an incorrect pick for the total points

Cincinnati at Houston (-3) 4:30 PM EST
Point Total 38.5
Cincinnati backed into the playoffs despite losing to the Ravens, everything fell their way. Houston is limping into the playoffs and may be down to Jake Delhomme as their QB. Houston played it smart at the end of the regular season opting to go for the win rather than risk more injuries by playing into overtime, I just don't think they are playing well enough to win right now.
Score Prediction : Cincinnati 24 Houston 17 (Cincinnati and under)

Detroit at New Orleans (-10.5) 8:00 PM EST
Point Total 59
IMO the best game of the weekend, Detroit is coming off a tough loss to the Packers and put up a ton of points, but they also surrendered a ton to Matt Flynn and the Packers 2nd team offense. Now they have to face a red hot Drew Brees and the team that is playing the best in the NFL right now.
Score Prediction : New Orleans 42 Detroit 28 (Saints and over)

Atlanta at NY Giants (-3) 1:00 PM EST
Point Total 49
The NY Football Giants won their way in last week by beating a mediocre Dallas team to win their division. The NFC East basically beat the hell out of each other all year long while the Falcons seem to be hitting their stride at just the right time.
Score Predicition : Falcons 32 Giants 20 (Falcons and over)
Pittsburgh (-8 ) at Denver 4:30 PM EST
Point Total 35
The Steelers are by far the best wild card team in the AFC, it's hard to swallow having a 12-4 record and having to play on the road in the playoffs to a over-rated Denver team. But Tebow and company keep findind ways to get things done, is this the end of the Cinderella season? I think the Steelers will pull out the W despite losing Mendanhall to a torn ACL, but 8 points is too much to give on the road, especially in the playoffs.
Score Prediction : Steelers 13 Broncos 7 (Denver and under)

Results:

Houston 31 - Cincinnati 10
New Orleans 45- Detroit 28
Ny Giants -24 - Atlanta 2
Denver 29 - Pittsburgh 23

muggs - 3-5
kermit - 6-2
mema - 6-2
ctown - 3-5
capri - 4-4

I must say, that Steelers/Broncos game was the best game of the weekend. Pittsburgh got Tebowed.

Sorry Capri, but the playoffs just got that much better for me with Pittsburgh out of the hunt!

No need to apologize ctown, quite honestly I did not think the Steelers were going far this year....too many injuries, hobbling bobbling Ben. HOWEVER---I am not a Denver fan, never was, and I think the Denver train stops at New England (at least I hope so). Which means I will be rooting for the Patriots, ugh, it's like the lesser of two evils!

Got to admit, the game was good, the others were a snoozefest!

Mema, I am now rooting for your RAVENS for the rest of the season, would like to see them at the Super Bowl! I wish them the best! cheers

Btw, I stink at this over/under thing, lol! Good job mema and kermit! :(happyhappy):

Well the NO game was at least high scoring - and Pittsburgh could not cover the long throws (poor Ike Taylor)

And Capi - given all the 8 and 8 teams this year, you are right on par with them (miles to go - 22 combined picks!)

Thanks everyone..... Congrats Kermieeeeee, I see we are in the same "bed" again... you are making this a habit I see... quit stealing all the blankets..lol!

Muggs...I have no doubt that you will rise to the top again!

Capri.... c'mon in, I have got you a nice cushie seat here on the RAVEN train. I dont know how much farther we will go, but I am sooooooo PROUD to be a RAVENS fan right now. If this week is their last, I will still wear my colors PROUDLY!!!!

The over/under thing has me perplexed as well....it was just a guess on my part, but it does kinda give a mulligan on the games... I like it.

It is truly FUN to play this with all of you.... I enjoy all the comments and look forward to see if I even come close... LOL

As for the Tebow train.... it stops here, all season I have watched the NFL network and am so sick and tired of hearing about him. (teeeeeeeeeeeebboowwwwww whhhooooaaaa) ugh! Capri's is right..... if the Steelers were running full steam, no injuries... they would of crushed the Broncos... and me. (if you remember... the first game of Ravens/ Pitts, Benny-boy was out and the second Palamalo and someone else was out for that one... I am not blind to my Raven Luck, but I am happy about it)

((((BIG HUGs )))) to all of you for making my football obsession so much fun.

Over/Under is usually a guess - how are the defenses - can the O put up points?

I thought Pittsburgh's D would show up more - I was watching the ESPN highlights. I don't know if Troy was always out of position or having to run around helping others...he always seemed to be coming into a play at the end (seldom making a stop).

I too think a healthier Pittsburgh would have helped...which is why teams try for the bye - you have the momentium vs rest theories

For Denver, they probably needed the momentium...can they keep it up vs NE - who knows!
